Bottled as part of a series celebrating 25 years of the Ardbeg Comittee, this is a 24 year old heavily peated expression, combining casks filled in the year 2000. The year 2000 was a big year for Ardbeg, as they started to fill casks after a historic renovation. Mainly matured in classic ex bourbon casks, Dr Bill Lumsden also chose some Amontillado casks, his favourite sherry, to finish a portion of this whisky.
This is the second bottling of these limited Y2K casks, after last year’s popular 23 year old, 2024 release.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose – Pungent, deep, aromatic and spicy, with beautiful notes of creamy toffee, flowering blackcurrants, creosote, coal tar soap, antique leather and almond nuts, with a splash of water, hints of charcoal, graphite and damp moss emerge, along with a distinct sooty note.
Palate – Astonishingly powerful and spicy on the palate, with a burst of deep intense, smoky flavours – coal tar mingles with woodsmoke, while antiseptic lozenges meet bonfire embers. The Amontillado sherry casks are present, albeit in the background, with subtle notes of toffee, leather, cinnamon and clove.
Finish – Long and lingering aftertaste, there are hints of menthol, eucalyptus, linseed oil and charcoal.
